The Many Ways of Travelling to Koh Samui
This fantastic island is the third largest in Thailand with an area of 228.7 square kilometres and a population of more than 50,000 people. It is referred to by the locals as simply Samui without the Koh. It is rich in natural resources, white sand beaches, coral reefs, and beautiful lagoons. An oasis of natural beauty, the place is truly a perfect tourist destination.
It was during the early 1970s that the first backpackers arrived on Koh Samui by a coconut boat. Later, in the early 1990s, hundreds of tourists started to arrive and, since then, it has soared in popularity. This was soon followed by the establishment of large resorts, restaurants, and bars, which has transformed the island's economy from being one that is dependent on agriculture to one that is based on tourism.
Today, the island has become Thailand's second largest tourist destination next to Bangkok. The expanding list of tourist attractions in Koh Samui includes the Choeng Mon village, where upmarket accommodations, restaurants, and bars are located. The beach is located in the North East tip of the island.
The place can be reached by all types of transportation. The most practical means to reach Samui is by air while the cheapest and the least comfortable option is the bus/boat combo. The latter, although cheaper (usually cost around 800 baht), can really eat your precious time (taking about 12-15 hours of your day), so travelling by air is really recommended. A one-way plane ticket costs between 2,000 and 4,000 baht.
The Airlines operating in the island offers a direct link to Hong Kong, Phuket, and Singapore. Thai Airways offers a service to Bangkok, while Air Asia has flights to Penang in Malaysia, and Berjaya Air to and from KL twice daily. Other flights are also available by appointment.

Another popular travel option is the train. Combination tickets include a rail ride to Phun Phin station and a ferry ride to Samui. This hassle-free option is worth taking since the overnight sleeper is more comfortable than that in the bus although more expensive. Ten trains depart Bangkok's Hualampong Station daily.
