Evolution of Melodies in the Asian Kingdom
The people of Thailand have a wide variety of traditional music, which immediately tells you how many ethnic groups from neighbouring nations have lived there for a long time. Today, it is found throughout the nation. Structurally, it resembles the ensembles of their neighbours. Hence, you can say that their music is connected to the dispersion of the musical cultures in Southeast Asia around the first century.
It is likely that this form of entertainment first emerged to accompany the many forms of drama, such as the kohn or lakorn, usually depicting the Ramakien, the Thai version of the Indian epic. Shadow puppet plays also utilise similar instruments. In later centuries, the use of this set spread further to local dances and pre-Buddhist ceremonies, such as the spirit trance dance.
Popular tunes of the west arrived relatively early in Thailand. In the first 50 years of the 20th century, jazz was already widespread in Bangkok. The indigenous popular songs of that time evolved after the Second World War and was taken from the early Central Thai forms.
Today, contemporary styles are greatly influenced by the West, and rock, rap, jazz, and blues are widespread in the country. They have even created their own brand of country music, which focuses on social awareness and poverty. Around the border of Laos, the folk mor lam is well-known. In a similar way, the region near Cambodia features tunes with a Khmer flavour.
